Located in Rowan County, Tiger World Endangered Wildlife Preserve is home to more than 40  endangered species or extinct species in the wild, including many tigers, leopards, a sun bear, a two-toed sloth, and the very rare liger to name just a few.

For anyone who loves sloths, don’t miss out on the sloth encounter. Cost is $100 for up to four people for 10 minutes of interactive time with the resident sloth. After a walkabout to see all the animals, enjoy a round of mini-golf at the newly opened Wild Adventure Golf. Book an educational tour Monday-Tuesday or Thursday-Friday or go on a self-guided tour 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Aquarium & Shark Lab by Team ECCO

The first inland aquarium in North Carolina, Aquarium and Shark Lab by Team ECCO in Hendersonville is home to over 275 fish, invertebrates, reptiles, and salamanders. There are two dozen exhibits, including a 2,000-gallon shark study tank, where interns and staff monitor the development of shark eggs. Open 1-4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday with shark and ray feedings at 1:15 p.m. teamecco.org

Animal Park At Conservators Center

The Animal Park at Conservators Center near Mebane offers educational tours of its 70 different animals, including the exotic Binturong from Southeast Asia to Geoffroy cats from South America, as well as ring-tailed lemurs, lions, leopards, and wolves. Visitors can choose from the Adventure Tour, a 90-minute walkabout with an educator to learn and see the animals up close. Come for the Twilight Tour when the the animals are more active. See a lorian, tiger, or bobcat being fed, and you might even hear the wolves howl or a lion “oof.” The park is open year round, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., opening up again at 5 p.m. for Twilight Tours. animalparknc.org
